Cabinetry in the Mizner Tradition
Custom cabinets in Boca Raton are often a matter of architecture. Addison Mizner was named town planner right after the 1924 incorporation, and his Mediterranean Revival style, with stucco walls, red tile roofs, arches, loggias and exposed rafters, still sets the tone across the city. Mizner even ran his own workshops, Mizner Industries, producing period furniture, antique-style millwork, ironwork and tile. Cabinets in a Boca home look right when they belong to that same vocabulary rather than fight it.
Design details that suit the style
Mizner liked new buildings to look old. He used pecky cypress, with its worm-eaten grain, for paneling and deliberately aged ironwork. Our version for modern kitchens and baths:
- Door styles: raised or recessed panels with arched tops on feature cabinets, or rustic plank doors for a pantry
- Wood and finish: cypress, knotty alder or stained oak with a hand-rubbed or glazed finish; painted cabinets in warm off-whites
- Hardware: forged or oil-rubbed iron pulls and exposed strap hinges on select doors
- Range hoods: a plaster or wood hood surround framed by open shelves or glass uppers
- Corbels and turned legs: on islands, to read as furniture rather than a box
Historic districts and older houses
Old Floresta was designated a city historic district in 1990 and includes a few small Mizner-era houses along with homes listed on the National Register. Interior cabinets are not usually what preservation rules target, but owners of these houses often want new work to respect original plaster, wood floors and window trim. We scribe cabinets to irregular walls rather than shimming them flat and avoid cutting into historic fabric where we can.
Large homes, many rooms
Forbes has ranked Boca's Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club first among the most expensive gated communities in the U.S. Bigger houses mean more than a kitchen: butler's pantries, bar cabinets with wine storage, paneled libraries, dressing rooms and media rooms. We design these as a coordinated set so finishes and proportions carry from room to room.
Climate and the water table
Boca has a tropical rainforest climate with about 57 inches of rain a year and frequent summer thunderstorms. The water table is high enough that basements cannot be built, so every cabinet sits at or near grade. Solid wood moves with humidity, so we use engineered cores under veneer for large panels, finish all six sides of each door and keep sink bases on moisture-resistant boxes.
Seasonal residents
In 2020, 16.2% of Boca's 48,728 housing units were vacant, a figure that reflects part-year homes. If you are away for the summer, we can schedule measuring and design during your stay and install while you are gone, with a trusted contact to let our crew in. We recommend keeping air conditioning set to control humidity while the house is closed.

Boca Raton History and Housing
- Mizner's planned resort. Boca Raton was incorporated as Bocaratone on August 2, 1924 and as Boca Raton on May 26, 1925; Addison Mizner was appointed town planner and his Cloister Inn was built in 1926.
- Old Floresta historic district. Old Floresta was designated a city historic district in 1990 and contains a few small Mizner-era houses and several homes listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Settled, older households. About 65.7% of homes are owner-occupied, households average 2.26 people and 84.5% of residents lived in the same house a year earlier; 24.6% of residents are 65 or older (Census ACS 2020-2024).
- No basements. The local water table prevents building basements; the city averages about 57.27 inches of rain a year with daily thundershowers common from June through September.

Boca Raton Questions
Can new cabinets match the Mediterranean style of my Boca Raton home?
Yes. We choose door profiles, wood species, glazes and iron hardware that relate to the stucco, tile and arches already in the house, and we can add details like corbels, turned island legs or a plaster-style hood surround.
I own a house in Old Floresta. Are there restrictions on interior cabinet work?
Historic district rules mainly focus on exteriors, but you should confirm with the City of Boca Raton before starting any project in a designated district. We plan installations to protect original plaster and trim either way.
We spend summers up north. Can the work happen while we are away?
Yes. We finish design and approvals while you are in town, then install with a designated contact on site. We send photos at key steps so you can see progress.
Is solid cypress a good idea in Boca's humidity?
Cypress handles moisture better than many woods, but large solid panels still move. We often use cypress veneer over a stable core for big doors and solid stock for frames and trim.
