Room to Build In
Custom cabinets in Plantation often mean more than a kitchen. Homes here tend to have room for a real family-room wall unit, a mudroom bench or a home office, and the households to fill them. In the 2020 census, 46.1% of Plantation households were married couples and 28.9% had children under 18. Census estimates put the average household at 2.58 people.
Built on drained Everglades
Before the 20th century, this land was Everglades wetland, often under 2 to 3 feet of water. The name comes from the Everglades Plantation Company, which tried and failed to grow rice here. The first homes went up on East Acre Drive in 1947, and early buyers were promised a full acre with every home, each with a two-bedroom house and a 20-tree orchard. Plantation incorporated on April 23, 1953, with about 300 residents.
What that means for your house
Many of the oldest Plantation homes are low, wide ranch houses, and later neighborhoods such as Jacaranda, developed after the Peters family sold about 5,400 acres west of University Drive in 1964, brought larger floor plans. In older ranch kitchens we often find soffits, short upper cabinets and dead corners. Taking soffits out and running cabinets to the ceiling, or adding a peninsula, can change how the room works.
Built-ins for the rooms people use
Plantation's floor plans give us space to work with. Common projects include:
- A media wall with closed base cabinets and open shelving above
- A home-office built-in with file drawers and a desk surface
- A drop zone near the garage door with cubbies, hooks and shoe storage
- Walk-in closet systems with islands or tower drawers
- Bar or butler's pantry cabinetry between kitchen and dining room
Tree City, damp air
Plantation was first named a Tree City by the Arbor Day Foundation in 1980. Mature trees and shade are part of what people like here, but shaded homes can stay damp, and South Florida humidity finds its way indoors. We use moisture-resistant boxes at sinks, seal all cabinet edges and recommend running the air conditioning consistently once new cabinets go in.
Kitchens, baths and the backyard
Beyond built-ins, we handle custom kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, cabinet refacing and outdoor kitchen cabinets for covered patios and pool areas. Homeowners here tend to stay: Census estimates show 64.3% owner-occupancy and 84.9% of residents in the same house a year earlier, so a well-planned kitchen will be in daily use for a long time.
Plantation Acres and larger lots
Plantation Acres, annexed in 1973, is designated a Special Public Interest Rural District to protect its natural landscape. Homes on bigger parcels often have detached workshops, barns or long covered patios where weather-rated cabinets and outdoor kitchen storage make sense. We spec those materials separately from indoor cabinetry.

Plantation History and Homes
- A full acre per home. The earliest Plantation homes sat on single-acre lots, each with a two-bedroom house and a 20-tree orchard, and the first were built on East Acre Drive in 1947.
- Family households. In the 2020 census, 46.1% of the city's 36,653 households were married couples and 28.9% had children under 18.
- Jacaranda's origins. Jacaranda was developed after the Peters family sold about 5,400 acres west of University Drive in 1964, with the aim of creating a Broward County equivalent of Coral Gables.
- Long-term owners. About 64.3% of homes are owner-occupied, with a median owner-occupied value of $483,500, per Census ACS 2020 to 2024 estimates.
- Tree City since 1980. Plantation was first named a Tree City by the Arbor Day Foundation in 1980, and Plantation Acres is designated a Special Public Interest Rural District.

Plantation Questions
Can you remove the soffits in my older Plantation kitchen?
Often, but not always. Some soffits are empty boxes, while others hide ductwork, plumbing or wiring. We check during the estimate and, if something needs to be rerouted, include that trade work in the plan.
Do you build home-office cabinetry?
Yes. Desk runs, file drawers, printer cabinets and shelving can be built into a spare bedroom or den and matched to the rest of your home's cabinetry.
Can a family-room built-in hide all the cords?
We plan cable paths, ventilated equipment cabinets and outlet locations as part of the design, so wiring stays out of sight.
How does humidity affect cabinets in a shaded home?
Shaded houses can stay damp longer. We use sealed, moisture-resistant boxes in wet areas and recommend keeping the home conditioned so doors and panels stay stable.
