A Kitchen Layout Built Around How You Cook
Custom kitchen cabinets start with a tape measure, not a catalog. We measure every wall, window and soffit, mark the plumbing and gas lines, and ask how you cook, where groceries land and who else uses the room. The cabinets are then drawn to those dimensions, so a run fits wall to wall without wide filler strips, uppers can go to the ceiling, and an island is sized for the walkway around it rather than for a standard box width.
Where custom earns its cost in a kitchen
The biggest gains are in awkward spaces. Fort Lauderdale has plenty of them: 1950s and 1960s ranch kitchens with low soffits, condo galley kitchens with a column in the corner, and newer homes with tall ceilings and long walls. Custom work can turn a blind corner into usable drawers, fit a pantry into a 14-inch gap beside the refrigerator, or carry uppers to a 10-foot ceiling with a stacked glass cabinet on top.
Boxes, doors and finishes for humid air
The sink base and the cabinet beside the dishwasher see the most water, so we build boxes from plywood, not particleboard, and seal every cut edge. For painted kitchens, MDF door panels resist the seasonal movement that can crack paint at the joints of solid-wood slab doors. Stained kitchens usually use five-piece doors with a floating center panel. Finishes are factory-cured, and the backs and edges of doors are sealed, not just the faces.
Layout details we plan for
- Work zones: prep space between the sink and the cooktop, and a landing spot beside the refrigerator and oven.
- Drawers over doors: deep drawers for pots and dishes in base cabinets are easier to use than shelves behind doors.
- Appliance fit: panel-ready dishwashers and refrigerators, microwave drawers and range hood cabinets sized to the exact model you have chosen.
- Islands: seating overhang, outlets required by code, and whether the sink or cooktop moves into the island.
- Pantry storage: pull-out pantries, roll-out shelves and tall cabinets with adjustable shelving.
When the plumbing or wiring moves
If the sink, range or refrigerator moves, or new appliance circuits are needed, that work needs permits regardless of cost. In a condo, the association will also want to review the plans, and some buildings restrict moving plumbing at all because it ties into shared risers. We flag those issues at the estimate so the design does not depend on a change you cannot make.
Countertops and timing
Countertops are measured after the base cabinets are installed and leveled, so there is usually a gap of one to two weeks between cabinet installation and countertop installation. If you are keeping your sink in service, we can plan a temporary setup. We coordinate the template date with your countertop fabricator, or with one you choose.

Custom Kitchen Cabinets Questions
How much do custom kitchen cabinets cost?
HomeGuide lists custom kitchen cabinets at about $15,000 to $30,000 for an average-sized kitchen, and $500 to $1,200 per linear foot installed. Wood species, painted versus stained finish, ceiling height and interior accessories move the number. We price your kitchen after measuring it.
How long does a custom kitchen cabinet project take?
Design and approvals usually take a few weeks, and building the cabinets takes several more depending on size and finish. Removal and installation typically take a few days, with countertops following once they are templated on the installed cabinets.
Can I keep my countertops and replace only the cabinets?
It is rarely practical. Stone tops are usually damaged or cracked when they are lifted off old cabinets, and the new layout often changes their size. If you want to reuse them, we can look, but plan on new countertops in most cases.
Are painted or stained cabinets better in Florida?
Both work if they are finished properly. Painted cabinets do best on MDF panels, which move less than solid wood and are less likely to show cracks at joints. Stained cabinets use solid wood frames with floating panels so the wood can move with the seasons.
