Storage Planned Around What You Own

Closets and built-in storage work best when they are designed around an inventory, not a picture. Before we draw anything, we look at what needs to go in the space: how much long and short hanging, how many pairs of shoes, folded clothes, bags, linens, or in a garage, tools, coolers and beach gear. From there we lay out rods, shelves, drawers and cabinets to fit the closet's actual walls, ceiling height and door swing.

Closet types we build

  • Walk-in closets: wall-to-wall systems with drawers, shoe shelving, double-hang rods and sometimes a center island.
  • Reach-in closets: maximizing a standard closet with double-hang sections, a drawer stack and shelves above.
  • Pantries: adjustable shelving, pull-outs and deep drawers in a walk-in or cabinet pantry.
  • Laundry rooms: cabinets over the washer and dryer, a folding counter and a hanging rod.
  • Garages: wall and base cabinets for tools and supplies.

Humidity, mildew and closets

Closets are the rooms most likely to trap damp air in a South Florida home: the doors stay shut, there is often no supply vent, and they sit against exterior walls that heat up in the afternoon sun. Mildew on leather shoes and bags is a common complaint. A few design choices help. Open or ventilated shelving and slatted or louvered doors let air move. Melamine and laminate surfaces wipe clean and do not absorb moisture the way raw wood does. Keeping clothes off the back wall and leaving a gap at the floor improves airflow. If a closet smells musty, check the air conditioning and consider a small dehumidifier as well as new shelving.

Garage cabinets in the heat

An uninsulated Fort Lauderdale garage can get very hot in summer, and it is damp. Particleboard cabinets tend to sag and swell there. For garages we recommend plywood, PVC or powder-coated steel cabinets, mounted on a wall rail or raised legs so the boxes stay off a floor that may get wet. Keep paint, solvents and pool chemicals in cabinets meant for them, and store pool chemicals apart from each other.

Materials and finishes

Most closet systems use melamine or laminate panels: they are stable, easy to clean and come in many colors and woodgrains. Wood veneer and painted plywood cost more and suit a dressing room meant to look like furniture. Fixr's 2025 figures run from about $125 to $150 per linear foot for laminate up to $200 to $1,200 for natural wood veneer. Hardware matters as much as panels: full-extension drawer slides, soft-close hinges and rods that will not bow under a full load of clothes.

Lighting and finishing touches

LED strip lighting along shelves and inside rod channels makes a walk-in usable at night. Many closets have no outlet in the right place, and adding one is electrical work that needs a permit. We plan any lighting at the start so wiring is not an afterthought.

Closets & Built-In Storage Questions

How much does a custom closet cost?

Fixr lists a national average of about $3,500 for a custom closet, with most projects between $2,500 and $5,000, with reach-ins around $1,200 to $5,000 and walk-ins around $5,000 to $10,000. Material and the number of drawers make the biggest difference.

How do I keep mildew out of my closet in Florida?

Keep air moving and humidity down. Ventilated shelving and louvered doors help, as does leaving space between clothes and the back wall. Keep the air conditioning running even when you travel, and consider a small dehumidifier in closets without a vent.

Is melamine or wood better for closets?

Melamine and laminate are stable, easy to clean and less expensive, which makes them a good choice for most closets. Wood veneer or painted wood costs more and suits a closet meant to look like furniture. Both need sealed edges in humid rooms.

What kind of cabinets hold up in a hot garage?

Plywood, PVC or powder-coated steel cabinets handle heat and damp much better than particleboard. Mounting them on a rail or legs keeps them off a floor that may get wet.
